Life gets busy. Work, family, grandkids, commitments. It's easy to put ourselves last. And then we wonder why we feel tired and run down.
Here's the good news. Staying strong after 50 doesn't take anything fancy. It takes a few basics done every day. These are the five I come back to again and again.
1. Drink more water than you think you need
You've heard it a million times, and it's still true. Even being a little low on fluids can leave you feeling tired and foggy. And as we get older, our thirst signal gets weaker. By the time you feel thirsty, you're already behind.
A simple target: about half your body weight in ounces each day. Start your morning with a full glass and have one with every meal. Keep a bottle where you can see it.
2. Put vegetables on every plate
Most of us don't eat nearly enough vegetables. The easiest fix is to stop thinking about "a serving" and just add them everywhere. Spinach in your eggs. A salad with lunch. Half your dinner plate in something green or colorful.
Raw or cooked both count. Cooking changes some nutrients, but a cooked vegetable you actually eat beats a raw one you skip. On busy days, a scoop of greens in water helps fill the gap.
3. Get protein at every meal
This is the one most people over 50 miss. We need more protein as we age, not less, to hold on to muscle. Aim for 25 to 35 grams at each meal. That's a few eggs, a chicken breast, a piece of fish, or a protein shake.

4. Move every day, and lift something
Exercise doesn't have to take all day or be boring. Walking counts. Biking counts. Pick things you enjoy, because those are the things you'll keep doing. I still train most mornings, and it's the best part of my day.
If you can, add some strength training two or three times a week. Weights, bands, bodyweight moves. Muscle is what keeps you getting up off the floor, carrying your own bags and playing with your grandkids.
Starting from zero? Start ridiculously small. Walk or ride for 5 minutes a day for two weeks. Exactly 5 minutes, even if you feel like doing more. Then go to 7 minutes, then 10, then 12. Keep building slowly. It sounds silly, but it works. You're building a habit before you build fitness, and the habit is what lasts.
5. Sleep, slow down and laugh
Your body rebuilds while you sleep. Aim for 7 to 8 hours and try to go to bed around the same time each night.
Take a few quiet minutes for yourself every day, too. You don't need an hour of meditation. Five minutes of quiet breathing, a walk outside, or even a long shower works.
And laugh. Loud and often. It's one of the simplest ways to lift your mood, and it's free.
Keep it simple
Water, vegetables, protein, movement and rest. None of it is new. What makes the difference is doing it every day. Pick one this week and start there.
